IF YOU COULD TAKE AMERICA BACK TO ANY YEAR...etc...

My friend, singer extraordinaire Ron Young of Little Caesar and the Tighty Whiteys recently posed the question Q: "If you could take America back to any year to 'Make It Great Again,' what year would it be and what makes us so great?"

Make way for a ( I hope) rare parade of narcissism. Here's my replies...

A: "I'm voting for the heyday of the Tongva Native Americans (later renamed Gabrielenos behind their backs.) They lived in West Los Angeles and Santa Monica, gathered to chat at their oasis at what is now University High School, went to the beach, went fishing, walked in the woods with their dogs and families day after day and lived in a beautiful spot with ideal weather and abundant food resources. If you add 'shopping' to that list, they had the perfect West L.A. lifestyle for thousands of years!"

I used to live around the corner from this Tongva oasis, and know how pleasantly temperate the climate is, plus it's an easy walk to the Pacific Ocean for beachcombing, and the resources of the hills are nearby. Altogether a pleasant environment for the tribe, despite their normal hardships. West L.A. has destroyed all evidence of Tongva except for the oasis above. On a happier note, much has been done to study and revive understanding the Tongva language.

Ron's is a popular forum on social media, and hundreds of replies offered dozens of different eras including, inexplicably to me for those who knew it personally, the 1950s.

A: "I was alive in the 1950s and the era was AWFUL. I cringed when people applauded the "Mad Men" lifestyle all those years removed. Misogyny was practically written in stone, integration and civil rights took masses of education to penetrate national mindsets and actually accomplish, and the clothes only flattered those whose good looks were part of their overall job skills (actors and models.)

In contrast, photographer Julian Wasser explained in the forward to his cool book "The Way We Were" how Los Angeles in the 1960s, when he first got into the biz, really was different than not only how it is today, but from the rest of the world. He explained that pre-inflation/recession etc., you really could live in a non-slum area here for very little money, single-income, modest-income families really could purchase an actual house, you really could pursue your preference of a job in the entertainment spheres because access was far more open.

There was a fun cultural revolution going on in all the arts, youth were educating themselves on every big picture with facts to contradict their prior generation's conclusions, and even if you weren't motivated to make it in the biz/change the world for the better/become champion surfer of the universe, Los Angeles/Hollywood in the 1960s was a fairly pleasant place and time to be."

DEE SNIDER, LITTLE CAESAR & PRINCE TRIBUTE ROCK THE WHISKY A GOGO's ULTIMATE JAM NIGHT 4.26.16

Ultimate Jam Night at the Whisky A Gogo, Hollyood CA hosts brilliant ideas to pack Tuesday nights, a traditionally slow one for clubs: #1, it's all ages and free! No cover! Zilch! and #2, since our locale is home to so many musicians of all calibers of talent and fame, why not invite whichever locals who aren't on tour rock the Whisky in whatever configurations they wish?

And rock they did, quite massively and with metal edge, on 4.26.16 in a bisected evening of hard rock and a full scale tribute to Prince, who had sadly passed away the week before (LINK.) The evening's compere was Jesse Blaze Snider, oldest spawn of Twisted Sister's Dee Snider, with Dad joining in the jams unannounced to belt out "We're Not Going To Take It" (of course) and AC/DC's "Highway To Hell" with his son. Wowza! It proved a warm family moment as well as exciting music.

Granted, the presence of broadcast network newsmobiles out front should have been a tip off, but all one could spot were their interviews with Gilby Clarke, longtime guitarist of Guns N'Roses post-Izzy Stradlin's departure. The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again" and AC/DC's "Whole Lotta Rosie" were his solo offerings.

One of the major draws of the evening, Little Caesar performed what was as close to a set as the jams allowed, with three cool songs including their chart hit back in the Geffen daze, a cover of "Chain Of Fools" joined by the amazing Prince Tribute singers.

Little Caesar are Ron Young, vocals; Loren Molinare, guitar; Tom Morris, drums, Paharoah Barrett bass and debuting guitarist Alex Kane, formerly of the Richie Ramone Band. This gig served as warmup for the European tour they embarked on within days.

Intermission entr'acte was the exotic dance stylings of Suzie Malone.

Ultimate Jam Night's Tribute to Prince may have been the best moments that UJN ever will serve up. Amazing singers normally found backing top names in music like Elton John, Rod Stewart, Madonna or Shakira were giving their all to do right by Prince. Note the sincere emotions evinced in so many of these performers.
Kudison Kai began the second half of the evening  with her cover of "Nothing Compares 2 U" that overpowered Sinead O'Connor's version with strong as well as vulnerable vocals.

"Nothing compares..."             "...nothing compares..."                          ...to you."

Militia Vox, normally found fronting Judas Priestess performed a properly salacious "Let's Go Crazy" replete with emulation of going down on the guitar.

Right, Eric Dover (Slash's Snake Pit, Jellyfish) teased the  crowd through his "Little Red Corvette."

"Goddess!" exclaimed Little Caesar's Alex Kane when describing Debby Holiday, who presented the combo of fabulous vocals and stunning looks for her take on the famously licentious"Darling Nikki."
Debby singing with Jason Joseph of SuperSoul Monday who also soloed "Beautiful Ones"

American Idol cutie Hunter Taran Larsen had the moxie to follow these performers with her sassy take on "Kiss."

Of course the show's closer was "Purple Rain" with everyone back onstage!

FANTASIA WAS MY CHUCK BERRY: LITTLE CAESAR

Disney fair use screen capture.

We're watching the PBS biographical-series on Walt Disney currently being broadcast in the U.S. because, you must remember, as a visual artist Fantasia was my Chuck Berry. I would not have gotten the above vintage shot of Ron Young in Little Caesar (LINK) without my recollection of the lighting in the "Night on Bald Mountain" sequence in that film. No one else there captured it.

Trivia/irony: Besides with Little Caesar, Ron currently sings with an all-soul/funk/Motown side project called The Blue-Eyed Devils. He still looks great in dramatic lighting two and a half decades later.

Trivia: my late father sang in the chorale featured at the end of this sequence.

LITTLE CAESAR LIVE at PALADINO's 5.29.15 before EUROPEAN TOUR

LITTLE CAESAR revved up for their forthcoming summer European tour with a gig/pre-tour party at Paladino's, Reseda CA  May 29, 2015. Seen here, singer Ron Young reaching out to a fan responding to Ron's characteristic emotion-packed soul/rock vocals.

Little Caesar's Ron Young, Tom Morris and Loren Molinare 2015 welcomed Cary Beare on guitar and Pharoah Bennett on bass, (the latter eventually celebrating when American Pharoah, his throroughbred namesake spelling his name similarly, won the Triple Crown of U.S. horse racing.)  All rocked hard, soulful as before, characteristic onstage camaraderie intact. No wonder all Europe loves them... Little Caesar's two and half decade history here: LINK and LINK.

8 NIGHTS THAT SHOOK L.A.'s ROCK WORLD!

By extraordinary coincidence, Los Angeles' four best local live (and recording) acts kicked summer tours off playing within 8 nights of one another for one helluva thrill-packed week+1, May 30, 31, June 1 and 6, 2015.  Photofeatures on each to follow momentarily. For now, a preview of sorts with a hands on theme-- from upper left clockwise: Little Caesar, Dr. Boogie, Ruby Friedman Orchestra and The Dogs.
